Happy Easter!

Easter here is extremely special. We don't make too big a deal about Christmas. We do, however, get to focus on the meaning of Christmas. Living here, I have realized, though, that Easter is actually more important than Christmas. Christmas could have happened, but without Easter it would have just been another birthday of someone long ago. And just like Christmas here, I like that WE get to dictate how we celebrate. There isn't too much consumerism to influence us with these holidays. We aren't bombarded with Easter bunnies and colored eggs and those wonderful, delicious Cadbury Eggs. Instead, I spent some time reflecting on Lenten thoughts and Ellie and I read and re-read all the stories that happened the week leading up to Easter. After reading so much about the betrayal and the suffering and the death, it was such a joy to wake up on Easter and together be able to celebrate. He is Risen!

As a matter of fact, the night before Easter (Easter Eve?), I told Ellie, "On Easter the way we greet each other is one person says, 'He is risen!' then the other person responds, 'He is risen, indeed!'"

We got up REALLY early on Easter morning to go out to worship with others in a field before the heat of the day. We were catching our ride at 6am! Ellie doesn't usually wake up that early, so I wasn't sure what her response would be when I said, "He is risen". Much to my delight, her tired, weak response was, "He is risen, indeed!" Then, she rolled over and said, "I need more sleep."

In spite of waking up before humans were meant to be awake, we had a great day celebrating. We celebrated in a field with some friends. We weren't sure it was going to happen because there had been a string of rainy mornings in a row, but it was a beautiful cool morning.

Abraham celebrating his first Easter.

I read the Easter story from a Children's Bible before the service started.

We got to the field, had our gathering, and were gone before most of the town was awake.

Ellie got to try on her friend's Easter bonnet.

Then we had lunch at a friend's house. It was a huge gathering. A pot had to be rented to make enough food for our gathering!

Ellie had fun playing with friends.

And Abraham got to swing for the first time in his life. You can see he liked it. :)

So, I'm almost a month late in saying it on the blog, but Happy Easter. I hope your Easter was meaningful!

Happy Easter to you too! Doesn't matter that you're late - it's a holiday that is to be celebrated every day!
